Study Group “Transmission of Knowledge”

Mission Statement

The current mission statements of the IMS Study Group “Transmission of Knowledge” correspond to the following four main topics: (1) pedagogic and disciplinary foundations and criteria; (2) the historical perspective of music education; (3) music teaching, in Europe and abroad; (4) models of didactic methodology as applied to music.

At the 19th Quinquennial IMS Congress (Rome, July 1–7, 2012) Giuseppina La Face (Bologna) chaired a study session devoted to a theme of great significance for musicology: “Transmission of Music Knowledge: Constructing a European Citizenship.” During this session, seventeen speakers (all of them musicologists, except for one pedagogue) from seven different European and non-European countries presented thirteen papers. The IMS Directorium formally approved the new IMS Study Group “Transmission of Knowledge as a Primary Aim in Music Education” in November 2012.

La Face (University of Bologna) is currently acting as chairman to the study group; Nicola Badolato, Carla Cuomo (both University of Bologna), and Paolo Somigli (University of Bolzano) are in charge of the secretariat. The list of active participants includes

  • scholars who took part in the study session on July 6, 2012, as well as scholars strongly engaged in music didactics. They are the core and permanent members of the study group (all of them are IMS members);
  • other scholars, both musicologists (IMS members) as well as pedagogues (from outside the IMS) interested in fostering studies in music didactics as a full-fledged and fully legitimated branch of musicology.

The study group is based at the University of Bologna (Dipartimento delle Arti, via Barberia 4, 40123 Bologna) and mostly meets in form of conferences on music didactics seen from the perspective of musicology. Contact will be kept through correspondence and through a yearly or half-yearly newsletter; synergies may be activated with groups and associations involved in the same area of musicological studies.
