Study Group “Music and Violence”
Mission Statement
The IMS Study Group “Music and Violence” was formed as a forum where scholars and researchers from all over the world share current research and expertise. It aims to facilitate a critical discussion, exchange, and collaboration concerning the ramifications of music and violence. Its scope is broad. It includes: current and historical uses of music and musical practices as a means of violence, as well as a means of resistance to violence during war and conflict; musical representations of violence; music as symbolic violence, that is, non-physical violence exercised between social groups in the form of Othering, shaming, negative recognition, and hegemony of (musical) values; the entanglement of music and musicking with environmental violence and destruction; and finally, the ways in which music has been embedded in systemic, racial, and gender violence in authoritarian as well as democratic regimes.
