Study Group “Cantus Planus”
Mission Statement
The objective of the IMS Study Group “Cantus Planus” is the advancement of research in fields relevant to the history and practice of liturgical plainchant as branches of learning and scholarship. In pursuing this objective, the study group encourages international cooperation and facilitates relations among researchers. A website and periodic email announcements keep members informed about relevant musicological projects in all countries.
The study group was founded in response to an initiative of the IMS Directorium in 1982. It meets at the Quinquennial IMS Congresses and independently in the intervening periods. Past chairs of the study group are Helmut Hucke, David Hiley, Ruth Steiner, Charles Atkinson, Barbara Haggh-Huglo, and Roman Hankeln. James Borders has been chair since April 2013. The study group’s email list contains 350 individual addresses.
