Study Group “Early Music and the New World”

Mission Statement

The mission of the IMS Study Group “Early Music and the New World / Música Antigua y Nuevo Mundo” is to further knowledge about music in Latin America from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, and also serve as the professional research branch of the “Progetto Higini Anglès,” which, supported by the Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra in Rome, intends to probe the cultural legacy of European missionaries in the Americas, Asia, and Africa, and also involve the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis for research into performance practice of early music. The study group was created in Havana, at the first conference of the IMS Regional Association for Latin America and the Caribbean, hosted by Casa de las Américas from March 17 to 21, 2014.
